The island has a particular extended shape (about 12 km long and 3 km wide). The vegetation is Mediterranean, that is very scarce. Geologically it belongs to Africa; moreover it is closer to Tunisian coasts than Italian ones, in addition it is just 113 km from Tunisian coasts (the maximum depth between the two coasts is barely 120m), Sicily (Porto Empedocle) is 205 km from Lampedusa. The highest point of the island is "l'albero del sole" (the sun tree), situated at an altitude of 133m..

Lampedusa is the southernmost point of Italy (the northernmost is Fonte della Roccia, hamlet of Predoi, while the point is the mountain "Vetta d'Italia", in German klockerkarkopf), in fact is it situated at a latitude of 35°30' north, southern than Tunis and Algiers. Lampedusa, politically Italian, geographically African, has a particular atmosphere that makes it one of a kind; it is the bigger of the Pelagie Islands (that include even Linosa and Lampione) and it is the southernmost island of Europe.

Lampedusa has lot of white sandy beaches like Cala Croce, Cala Madonna, Cala Greca and Cala Galera and, on the other side, Cala Francese, Cala Calandra, Cala Pisana and Mare Morto. Very famous is "Isola dei conigli", esteemed to be one of the most beautiful beach of the world, reachable by foot. Its name came from the little island that is in front of the beach, in the past populated by lots of little rabbits. Today the area is a Nature Reserve to protect caretta-caretta turtle's eggs.

The Pelagie islands are the southernmost jewel of the national system of italian marine protected areas. The archipelago has lot of treasures and environmental characteristics that belong to two continents: Africa and Europe.

White Lampedusa, black Linosa and the remote little island Lampione are bases of careful policies of environmental protection and make their contribution to the challenge of sustainability in Italy. Every year lot of rorquals pass in the archipelago's area, from the end of February to April, near the coast of Lampedusa or Linosa it is very easy to sight rorquals, you can see them in groups or alone. The archipelago formed by Lampedusa, Linosa and Lampione is an important area for wintry nutrition of this species threatened with extinction. The scientific name of this species is Balaenoptera physalus, it is the biggest cetacean of the Mediterranean, a giant 20m long and 50 tons weight. Surveys of distribution and number of individuals of the whale estimate a population of about 3000 specimens. The monitoring of the Marine Protected Area "Isole Pelagie" focuses on this endangered species therefore protected by national laws and international agreement.
